We are starting breast/bottle feeding with Little Bug this week on stage 1.
Stage 1 means two breast/bottle feedings in a 24 hour period and the other 6 are by his feeding tube.
In order to start stage 1 he must be showing us he is interested - rooting, waking before feeding, ect.
In order to advance to stage 2 (3-4 breast/bottle feedings in 24 hours) he must finish his bottle by at least 75%, OR breastfeeding for at least 20 min (I think) everytime and his oxygen cannot dip below 80% while he is feeding.
There are four stages he must accomplish before we can go home. The last stage is called "infant request" and we no longer wake him every three hours to feed, he sleeps as long or as short as he wishes, and we feed him when he wakes.
Bug will probably start stage 2 here by the end of the week. He wakes acting very hungry and demanding, but if when we tried stage 2, we were feeding him too often - he would fall asleep after just a few minutes and we would have to do the rest thru his tube. So for now we just give him a binki and rock him back to sleep. He lays awake until the feeding pump is half way thru and then finally gives up and falls asleep.
Until next time!
